Communication between state machines

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question, as it is adressed to the community as a whole and not just Ludiq, so please educate me if this is misplaced.

How do you guys handle communication between state machines?

I currently have a setup where the UI is a grand state machine, and each component in the game is a small state machine. The UI then fires events onto relevant components, that the small machines then pick up on.
But I am curious as to how other people organize their projects?
